The Greater Sudbury Airport will receive $261,901 from the federal government to make lighting and safety upgrades, Sudbury area's two MPs announced Wednesday.

At a news conference at the airport, Sudbury MP Paul Lefebvre said the investment is from a $10 billion fund over 11 years to upgrade Canada's transportation infrastructure.

"We need to ensure that people and products can move quickly and safely, whether they're going from home to work, or from Sudbury to Africa," Lefebvre said.

"The safety of passengers and employees at our airports is of paramount importance to our government. These investments will ensure the Greater Sudbury Airport will operate safely and efficiently as a regional, vital transportation link to residents and businesses."

The money comes through the Airports Capital Assistance Program and will be spent on two projects: replacing apron flood lighting to ensure and improve visibility, and for upgrades to the constant current regulator panels at the airport. The panels supply power and control all airfield signs, navigation aids and airfield lighting.

“The Greater Sudbury Airport is a vital link for residents and businesses in this region,” Nickel Belt MP Marc Serré is quoted as saying in a news release. “This project will help ensure continued safe airport operation for passengers, flight crews, employees, and medical evacuation and forest fire fighting activities, while contributing to the community’s economic and social well-being.”

"These are phenomenal projects for us to have funding for today," said airport CEO Todd Tripp. "Safety at the airport is paramount for all of us, and by having these projects funded and completed this year, will be phenomenal for us. This will do wonders to help us grow business at the airport.

"Everyone has wonderful things to say about this airport, but it's not me, it's our team that's doing it."

And Deputy Mayor Al Sizer said it's important for local travellers to have confidence in the safety of air travel.

"Travellers know that airports are highly technical,” Sizer said. “So ensuring that our community is serviced with modern lighting equipment, power suppliers and navigation aids and other upgrades not only brings peace of mind, but it's also a sign the airport is open for business."
