Sudbury apartment fire displaces 30, leaves one in hospital

The fire occurred on Jan. 28 at Benvenuto Apartments on Ramsey View Court

Greater Sudbury Fire Services were on the scene Jan. 28 of a fire at Benvenuto Apartments on Ramsey view court in the south end of Sudbury.

Approximately 30 people have been displaced from the building and one person was transported to hospital.

The blaze required firefighters from Downtown, Long Lake, Minnow Lake, New Sudbury and Valley stations.

Sudbury Professional Firefighters reported through their Facebook page that Engine 4 crew were met with heavy smoke and flames visible from a fifth story window. Engine 4, with the help of Engine 1 and Ladder 1 crews, connected to the building's standpipe and made an effective fire attack on the fire floor.

Several residents were advised to “protect in place”, a tactic firefighters state was used to prevent exposure of residents to the hot smoke and gasses from the apartment blaze. Once the blaze was under control and the smoke and gasses were removed from the affected floors, the remainder of the residents were evacuated while the fire was investigated.

The fire was contained to one apartment but a few other apartments suffered smoke and water damage.

Several community services were on hand to support the residents, with GSPS, paramedics and the red cross available, as well as Greater Sudbury Transit buses to keep evacuated residents warm.
