Local police officers and firefighters are trading their daytime uniforms for hockey jerseys and skates for the annual Fire and Ice Charity Hockey Game on Feb. 7.
The annual charity game between Greater Sudbury Police Service and Greater Sudbury Fire Service benefits Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer, a Sudbury-based charity that supports families of children with cancer.
In highlighting the work of the charity, organizers shared a bit of the story of the Balloway family of Sudbury. The family’s 11-year-old daughter, Addison, was diagnosed with leukemia Aug. 16, 2023 at age 11.
"It was such a surprise and the first few weeks were a whirlwind,” the family said in a Facebook post about the game. “Our lives were turned upside down and we were all absolutely devastated. Other than the support from our family and community of amazing friends, the NOFCC stepped in and gave us help when we needed it the most.”
The family said the support provided by the charity is instrumental.
“They have been a constant support from the beginning and continue to be throughout our cancer journey. From the monetary help we receive for the constant trips back and forth to SickKids, to the tutoring Addy needs because she misses so much school, to the wonderful events they put on so the kids feel like superstars!
“They really have been a bright shining light despite this dark diagnosis. From the bottom of our hearts, we are forever grateful!"
Proceeds from last year’s game, which totaled more than $12,000, went to the NEO Kids Foundation.
