Symboticware Inc., a data solutions company based in Sudbury, has recently announced a partnership with Uptake, a Chicago-based company specializing in industrial artificial intelligence.
The purpose of the partnership is to provide mining companies with an integrated solution that combines data science and AI to improve the productivity of mobile mining equipment.
Their proposed solution is a combination of two products and services.
Symboticware's SymBot is a sensor network that connects to the company's data collection platform. It collects data from sensors placed on mining fleets, stores it in a database and transmits the information to a centralized server.
The SymBot is designed for underground mines. It can withstand harsh physical conditions and perform when offload connectivity is not available.
This technology will be combined with Uptake's Asset Performance Management (APM) software called Asset IO which applies artificial intelligence to obtain predictive insights from the collected data.
Mining companies will not only be able to collect data from their fleets accurately and quickly, but by using Asset IO, they will also be able to analyze the data to predict future asset failure.
“Industrial data is only as good as the insights that can be gleaned from it,” said Kirk Petroski, president and CEO of Symboticware Inc., in a press release.
“This solution delivers predictive insights that are both accurate and actionable, providing the user with sufficient lead time into maintenance issues so they can be ahead of the curve. That ability to proactively mitigate maintenance problems yields a proven, measurable increase in productivity.”
According to Petroski, industry partners are increasingly looking for solutions that are able to gather quality data from mixed fleets (rather than individual pieces of equipment). They also need a solution that can standardize that data and turn it into something useful.
The solution is expected to save as much as $2.5 million annually in haul truck maintenance, fuel, and tire costs alone. The productivity of the mining fleet is also expected to increase through informed decision-making.

Uptake and Symboticware Inc. will be at the Future of Mining Americas conference in Denver from Oct. 21 to 22.
