Two new specialists, a husband and wife team, have recently joined the Sudbury Regional Hospital bringing the total count of new physicians to 12 for 2002.

Originally from Kitchener, Dr. Gerard Shoemaker, a specialist in internal medicine and cardiology, and Dr. Michelle Ponti, a paediatrician, were attracted to Sudbury for a variety of reasons. These included the new single-site hospital, the Northern Medical School, lifestyle advantages and the offer made by the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce members in the Physician Recruitment Package.

Â?Sudbury had a great deal of appeal to us,Â? said Shoemaker. Â?We are both very interested in teaching and look forward to the opportunity of doing so with the establishment of the Medical School. We wanted to settle somewhere where we could be very active in the community and Sudbury provided us with the greatest opportunities to be involved socially and in the clinical setting. We investigated opportunities in over 15 centres across Canada and decided on Sudbury for the family-oriented community, proximity to Southern Ontario to visit our families, as well as the growing health care section for new physicians.Â?

The Sudbury community now has a team of over 260 family physicians, specialists and midwives who see approximately 350,000 patients each year from across northeastern Ontario.
