Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) is reporting that four new COVID-19 related deaths have occurred in the past two days. This comes on the same day PHSD raised the COVID risk index from moderate to high.

The health unit reported that in one of the new cases the cause of death was unknown. In the other three cases, PHSD said COVID-19 contributed to, but was not the underlying cause of death.

This now brings the local COVID death count to 173 since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, 30 months ago.

Wednesday's health unit summary also revealed there were 52 new cases of COVID-19 in Greater Sudbury. The total number of COVID cases for the Sudbury health jurisdiction since the pandemic began is 18,622.  The largest number of those cases (6265) were people in the 20 to 39 age group.

The PHSD summary also revealed there are 18 active COVID-19 outbreaks in the Greater Sudbury area. This involves outbreaks in local long-term care homes, the hospital, retirement homes and other congregate settings.

Health Sciences North is reporting 31 COVID-19 cases in the hospital, with only one of those individuals in the Intensive Care Unit.

HSN currently is also monitoring following three active COVID-19 outbreaks:

  • 8 North, RLHC (declared August 23, 2022)
  • 7 North, RLHC (declared September 1, 2022)
  • Reactivation Care Unit, Lodge 2, RLHC (declared September 7, 2022)
