Sudbury magazine promotes careers in mining

Twenty ambassadors of the mining industry will provide Ontario secondary students with an intimate, first-hand account of a world most young people know very little about through a bilingual mining careers magazine published in Sudbury called RockON.

From prospectors and geologists to miners, mechanics and engineers, RockOn features profiles on a number of careers in the mining industry and will be available to students across Northern Ontario as well as to guidance counsellors throughout the province.

"The profile approach makes it a lot more personal," said RockON editor Norm Tollinsky.

"Students will be able to relate to the employees profiled and pick up on their passion for an industry that offers exposure to the outdoors, opportunities for travel and the use of cutting-edge technology."

For students entering the mining industry, the timing couldn't be better with the demand for human resources on the rise. According to the Mining Industry Training and Advisory Council, the industry must attract 81,000 new people in the next 10 years to meet demand and fill positions vacated by retirees.

RockON will also award three $1,000 scholarships to students interested in pursuing a career in mining. For more information visit www.rock-on.ca.
