August 10 is Prisoners' Justice Day, a day when prisoners and their supporters remember the men and women who have died from unnatural deaths inside prisons and penetentiaries.

The day has been commemorated since 1975 to remember Eddie Nalon, a prisoner at Millhaven Penitentiary, who bled to death in a solitary confinement cell, despite attempts to summon guards for assistance in August 1974.

Local organizations like the John Howard Society of Sudbury, the Elizabeth Fry Society and the N'Swakamok Native Friendship Centre, who work with people who are or have been incarcerated, were in attendance and put together the ceremony on the front lawn of the Sudbury Jail today.

Prisoner's Justice Day ceremonies have been held throughout Canada and the world since 1974, and continue to spread awareness and address the issue of violence within the walls of incarceration.
