The Sudbury Arts Council has invited mayoral candidates in Greater Sudbury to take part in a special discussion on the arts Oct. 1.
The event gets underway at 7 p.m. at Sudbury Theatre Centre.
The arts directly improve the quality of life for all Sudburians through theatre, music, dance, fine/ graphic arts, and literature, plus the arts are a key source of tourism and income generation, said a press release.
Despite the arts being a valuable economic driver for Sudbury, the city currently provides less financial support to our arts community than other cities based on population levels.
Candidates are being asked to supply responses for various questions including the allocation of grants and funding toward arts initiatives and establishments.
"We need to hear their priority levels regarding the importance of the arts and dealing with funding for the community," the press release said.
The meeting will not take the form of a debate, but will attempt to discover the views of candidates with respect to their support of local arts groups and artists, said Sudbury Arts Council president Linda Cartier.
Gerry Labelle will moderate the meeting. It should not last longer than one hour. This conversation will be followed by a social period in the Theatre Centre Lounge.
