Local resident Stéphanie Leroux will be travelling to Romania May 2 as part of a humanitarian mission.

The second year optometry student at the Université de Montréal will be joined by other students from her program as well as students from the University of Waterloo.

These students will perform eye examinations and dispense glasses to underprivileged Romanian citizens. Each student will be bringing 45 pounds of donated glasses to Romania.

The clinics will be offering eye examinations under the guidance of licensed optometrists and will be offering dispensary services to ensure that their patients get the proper glasses.

The mission's purpose is to provide vision care to people who are not able to afford the service or who cannot access such care.

This is not Leroux's first humanitarian mission. While at student at E.S.C. Champlain in Chelmsford, she participated in the "Dominican Republic Experience."

At that time, she vowed to one day continue her work in underprivileged countries.

"After my trip to the Dominican Republic in 2003 and again in 2004, I knew that doing this type of work would be a big part of my life," said Leroux.

"This trip to Romania is an opportunity for me to carry on with helping some of the world's underprivileged people."

The Romania Mission will run from May 2 to May 21.
