Updated: Seventeen-year-old charged with attempted murder in downtown stabbing of woman

Following an incident where a woman was stabbed near Medina Lane in downtown Sudbury Sept. 15, a 17-year-old young man has been arrested and charged with multiple offences, including attempted murder.

After an investigation, Greater Sudbury Police detectives charged the teen early today.

Just before 12:40 a.m., detectives from the GSPS Break Enter and Robbery (BEAR) Unit of the Integrated Crime Section, assisted by patrol officers, located and arrested the youth on Elgin Street.

The accused has been charged with:

  • Carrying a Concealed Weapon
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • Attempt to Commit Murder
  • Failure to Comply with Release Order
  • Fail to Comply with Sentence

The accused cannot be named under the Young Offenders Act. He attended bail court today to answer to the above charges.

Greater Sudbury Police Service has released a photo, captured by video surveillance, of the person they believe stabbed a woman on the path off of Medina Lane in downtown Sudbury on Sept. 15.

Sudbury police are requesting the public's assistance after an overnight stabbing on Medina Lane in downtown Sudbury. 

Police say they were called out to the scene at around 8:30 p.m. Sept. 15 after a report of an assault with a weapon.

The information provided to police was that an unknown individual had stabbed a woman while she was walking on the path off of Medina Lane.

Upon arrival, officers located a 26-year-old woman, who had sustained what is believed to be a stab wound. She was transported to hospital by City of Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services with serious injuries.

Through the investigation, it has been determined that an unknown individual approached two women walking on the path and knocked one of the women to the ground while stabbing her. The individual fled on foot prior to police arrival.

The individual is described as being 5-6 to 5-7 tall, and wearing dark clothing, a baseball hat, with the hood of their jacket pulled up over their head at the time of the incident.

At this time, police have not been able to determine whether or not the individuals know each other.
