After winning the 2017 Ugliest Schoolyard Contest, Sudbury Secondary School showcased its transformed outdoor green space during a special open house Oct. 12.

From pulling weeds and spreading soil, to laying mulch and pushing gravel, staff and student volunteers worked diligently throughout the summer to prepare for landscaping.

“Students were very much involved in the execution of this project,” said Sudbury Secondary School Principal Bob Deeth, in a press release. “Through this experience, they have gained a sense of pride for their school, and are eager to maintain the space they helped to create.”

Now complete, the courtyard features an outdoor ampitheatre/classroom, multiple shade and maple trees, beautiful perennial gardens planted by students, and wood benches with flower boxes built by students in the woodworking class.

“Our new and improved outdoor space is a wonderful complement to the recent revitalization of the school,” said Deeth. “The courtyard is now a scenic sanctuary where students can relax, reflect and rejoice in their accomplishments.

“I would like to extend a sincere thank you to teacher Lorrie Leger for preparing and submitting the application, all volunteers who rolled up their sleeves to make the transformation possible, and the many sponsors for their generous contributions.”
