Sudbury Secondary School will host a fundraising gala in support of purchasing cancer detection equipment for the Northeast Cancer Centre Friday, March 29 in the lower hall of the Caruso Club in Sudbury.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Dinner starts at 6:30 pm.

“This event will be filled with positivity and hope,” said Heather Downey, Principal of Sudbury Secondary School, in a press release. “Everyone is welcome to join us as we gather together to support a cause that has touched so many lives.”

The gala will feature a variety of artistic performances from the talented students, staff and alumni of Sudbury Secondary School as well as music by Shake It Up Media.

There will be a penny table and silent auction.

The idea for the gala began in 2016 when students Ben MacKenzie, Lauren Dore and Abby Loiselle were looking for ways to support teacher Vicki Ashick-Faux.

Ashick-Faux was diagnosed with two types of breast cancer in January 2016. Her cancer, although found in its early stages, could have spread very rapidly.

“One might say I am one of the lucky ones,” she said. “With early detection, chemotherapy treatment, and a mastectomy, I am proud to say that I am now cancer free.”

All proceeds from the gala will support the Northern Cancer Foundation's Angels in Pink Fund. The fund supports the purchase of medical probes that detect breast and prostate cancer.

Student gala committee members Mani Cuza, Jack Cushnie, Carley MacKenzie and Student Trustee Hannah Golden are thrilled to support such a worthwhile cause. “As students, we can play a vital role in continuing the fight against a disease that has affected so many,” Golden said. “Every dollar counts.”

Tickets are $50 per person or $350 for a table of eight.
