Two years in the making, Greater Sudbury's first private adult day program for seniors is set to open July 2.

Marguerite Lecuyer has renovated a home on Westmount Avenue in New Sudbury to suit the needs of about 10 seniors on a daily basis. Sudbury Seniors Day Care will operate from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and be staffed with certified, bonded personal support workers.

It's a place where seniors can go to socialize in a relaxed and welcoming environment, Lecuyer said.

“Socializing is important for the elderly, and that's exactly what we want for them here,” said Lecuyer, who has more than 20 years of experience in home care. “We offer a variety of activities, such as cribbage, chess, television and movies, crafts, outdoor planters, nail and hair care.

“It's going to be a lot of fun for them. It's a home away from home, and we want them to look forward to coming here and hanging out with us.”

Having been in the home care business for more than two decades, Lecuyer has seen the stress and burn out in families that care for their elderly loved ones.

“I hear so many stories from family members who tell me they are tired because they are caring for their parent, that they aren't able to go out and do what they need to do,” she said. “This is a place you can bring your loved one while you go out and do a bit of shopping. It provides some respite.”

The home is located on Westmount Avenue, near Churchill Public School. It's minutes away from the New Sudbury Centre, as well as many other shopping destinations.

The starting rate is $25 an hour, but Lecuyer said she is looking into subsidization, similar to the way families are subsidized for their children who attend daycare. She said she should know more by June.

Lecuyer will have a booth at the 50+ Seniors Expo, being held June 2-3 at Cambrian College. Lecuyer is also holding an open house June 16 so families can visit and see what it's like.
