Sudbury steel fabricator Baycar shutting down

Baycar Steel Fabricating Limited will end its operations this summer, said company owner Patrick MacIsaac.

“We're shutting down,” he said. “It's just a matter that it was the appropriate time to do that.”

MacIsaac declined to provide more details about the company, or why it will be ending operations.

According to an Industry Canada profile of Baycar Steel, published on Jan. 24, 2014, the company had 25 employees at that time.

Baycar Steel was incorporated in 1968 to serve mining projects in Sudbury and Elliot Lake.

The company designs and fabricates steel, stainless steel, aluminum and alloy structures for the mining sector.

“Our reputation has given us the opportunity to display our handy work around the world as in Australia, Asia, South America, and the United States,” says a description on Baycar Steel's website.

“From this mining base, we have expanded our services to include many products such as vessels, bridges, conveyors, construction and forestry equipment, and specialized fire training equipment and custom fabrication.”

According to Industry Canada, the company had total sales between $1 million and $5 million in early 2014. In the same period, Baycar Steel's exports were between $500,000 and $1 million.

Baycar Steel has a 55,000-square-foot facility on Old Burwash Road, in Sudbury.
