Sudbury Symphony Orchestra invites you to kick off fall in a classical way with a series of free concerts for the whole family.

On Saturday, Oct. 15, SSO starts its series of free performances at the Mackenzie Street branch of the Greater Sudbury Public Library at 10 a.m. Sudbury poet laureate Kyla Heyming is the special guest, and she and the SSO String Quartet “will blend music and stories for whomever shows up, whatever the age!” the symphony said in a news release.

“We encourage mothers or fathers and young children, grandmothers and any extended family members. The program will be in both French and English.”

Then on Sunday, Oct. 16, enjoy the first in a series of “bring the whole family” chamber music concerts, hosted by the SSO String Quartet at Place des Arts, starting at 2 p.m. Poet laureate Kyla Heyming will be on hand for this one, too, offering an exploration of poetry, music and storytelling.

As the season progresses, SSO will welcome guest conductor Martin MacDonald to the first main series concert of the season. The performance will be held at Sudbury Theatre Centre, and will include a pre-concert chat with MacDonald and a post-concert meet-and-greet at the STC bar.

On Oct. 22, the full orchestra will perform “Songs and Dances”, which gives a nod to “our nordic residents with some Sibelius and some Greig; a nod to the great Beethoven; two wonderful Canadian pieces by two famous women composers and finally, the erotic and the exotic:  some excerpts from Bizet’s Carmen.”
