Short notice, but the public is welcome to celebrate World Vyshyvanka Day with Sudbury’s Ukrainian Community starting at 4:30 p.m today, May 15, at Hnatyshyn Park in downtown Sudbury.
The third Thursday in the month of May is celebrated in the Ukrainian community as a chance to honour the Vyshyvanka, the embroidered shirt synonymous with Ukraine and considered, according to a sign at Sudbury Ukrainian Centre, “the spiritual armour of the Ukrainian people.”
Outside the Ukrainian Centre decorating for the day was Natalia Kolomyitchouk, Taras Martyn, Stephan “Steve” Dubnewych and Lydia Katulka.
The event is open to the public and if you have one, you’re asked to wear your favourite Ukrainian shirt or blouse. There is a Vshyvanka walk though the park, a chance to take a photo at their Ukrainian photo booth and “take in a short program by students of “Ridna Shkola” said the Ukrainian Centre’s Facebook page.
