The eyes in the skies watching downtown Sudbury will soon be able to see a whole lot better.

Meeting this week, members of the police services board approved a plan to update several of the 17 Lions' Eye In the Skye cameras with upgraded ones that are not only wireless, but offer high-definition resolution.

Two cameras have already been upgraded – the new one installed in 2016 at Hnatyshyn Park, and the one at Beech and Elgin streets that was replaced last year. Another 12 are due to be replaced, with the first eight to cost an estimated $86,000.

The cameras have been successful in helping solve and prevent crimes downtown. The vastly improved resolution on the new versions will make it easier for police to identify suspects and read licence plates.

“The difference between the old cameras and the new ones is night and day,” according to a presentation on the new system.

The project will be funded from police reserve funds. The new system is cheaper to operate and maintain, and the reserve funds will be replenished through annual savings estimated at $17,280 a year.
