Sun hats for kids

In an effort to protect children from the sun's harmful UV rays, the Sudbury and District Health Unit is launching a new initiative called Sun Hats for Kids.

Throughout March and April, the Health Unit is asking residents to drop off gently used brimmed hats in collection bins located across the city.

With the help of Sudbury Steam Laundry and Dry Cleaners, the hats will be cleaned and distributed to families in need during National Sun Awareness Week, May 29 to June 4.

According to the health unit, children are more at risk in the sun because their skin is thinner, more sensitive and less protected from the sun's rays. There is evidence that even one sunburn can increase the chance of skin cancer later in life.
