The United Way Sudbury and Nipissing Districts is holding an event called “Tampon Tuesday” Feb. 28 to collect feminine hygiene products for women experiencing homelessness or poverty.

“Periods are a fact of life,” said a press release.

“For women living in poverty, there is an added challenge of acquiring these products. We want to help!”

The event, aimed at union members and the labour community, is specifically hosted by the United Way's Labour Community Services program, jointly run by the United Way Centraide Canada and the Canadian Labour Congress, and locally implemented by our United Way and the Sudbury and District Labour Council (SDLC).

Union members are invited to come out for a social evening of fun and learning. The price of admission is one unopened box of menstrual hygiene products.

Representatives from community agencies will be there to talk about some of the challenges women living in poverty face in our community.

“We want to ensure that all women have access to these needed products,” said Nicole Beaulieu, director of labour community services, United Way/Centraide Sudbury and Nipissing Districts, in a press release.

“This event is about empowering women, bringing labour and the community together, helping each other out and just having an opportunity to learn and socialize together, in a relaxed and inclusive environment.

“Unions and their members make a difference in the community every day. Whether it’s financial contributions to United Ways and a myriad of other community resources and services, packing knapsacks with school supplies for kids who would otherwise go without, or feeding thousands of hungry souls at Christmas, unions stand up for their communities. This is just one other way we are hoping to make a difference right here at home.”

The event takes place from 5-7 p.m. Feb. 28 at Overtime Bar and Grill on Notre Dame Avenue. RVSP at 705-560-3330, ext. 223.
