The Ontario Liberals have a candidate in Nickel Belt after a short, but sweet, nomination meeting on Oct. 14.

Tay Butt, a technology consultant and former Cambrian College instructor, was the sole candidate seeking the nomination. He said in a news release that he’s excited to be flying the flag of a party that, in his view, has worked hard for Northern Ontario.

“I’m excited and honoured to be carrying the Liberal flag in the June 2018 provincial election,” Butt said. “Premier Kathleen Wynne has always prioritized and supported Northern Ontario, with the help of passionate, effective local MPPs from the North. I want to join her team to provide our riding with a strong voice at Queen’s Park.”

The news release highlighted Butt’s community work, including serving on the Sudbury Diversity Advisory Panel, the Race Relations Committee of the Greater Sudbury Police, the Local Immigration Partnership, and the Sudbury Multicultural and Folk Art Association. Butt has also volunteered with the Canadian Cancer Society and the Heart & Stroke Foundation, “raising hundreds of thousands of dollars.”

He is a recipient of the Ontario Volunteer Service Award.

Glenn Thibeault gave his endorsement to Butt, as well.

Everyone that has worked with Tay knows that he is a strong leader, and a dedicated advocate for his community and Northern Ontario as a whole,”Thibeault said.

Besides a Bachelor’s Degree in mathematics and a Master’s Degree in English, Butt is also a Cisco and Microsoft Certified System Engineer and Database Administrator. He and his wife have four children and a grandchild. They have lived in Greater Sudbury for nearly 30 years.
