Dr. Kevin McCormick is both a familiar name and familiar face in Greater Sudbury.
The president and vice-chancellor of Huntington University sits on a number of charitable boards in the community and is developing quite the reputation for his philanthropic activities.
It seems this is rubbing off on his two teenaged sons — Christopher and William. Their organization, “A Place to Call their Home,” is largely responsible for the new Community and Family Support Room at Child & Community Resources on Gill Street near the old general hospital.
Combined with donations from both Huntington University and their father, Christopher and William's organization — an initiative that sends school supplies purchased and shipped at their own expense to students in developing countries — has provided all of the equipment and supplies for the new room — a sort of play room in the Child & Community Resources facility.
Additionally, their donation has sponsored several children for respite services at the facility over the summer.
According to Child & Community Resources, their new Community and Family Support room will be used to enhance community and respite services, the goal of which is to provide support to families of individuals with a developmental disability, including autism.
These supports include participation in recreational, skill-building and transitional programming, to provide participants with the opportunity to develop social interaction and leisure skills.
Services are available after school, on weekends, overnight, and during summer and the March break. This respite care allows parents and guardians a reprieve from the demands of caring for children and youth with unique and challenging needs.
In honour of Christopher and William's grandmother, the new room will be named after Doris Jane McCormick.
