The Sudbury & District Health Unit laid 20 charges under the Tobacco Control Act against 10 retailers in the city.

The retailers are accused of selling tobacco products to underage test shoppers during the months of October, November, and December. Ninety-five tobacco vendors in the City of Greater Sudbury and Districts of Sudbury and Manitoulin, including Chapleau, Gogama and Sudbury East, were targetted.

Â?We are disappointed that tobacco vendors continue to sell tobacco to people under 19 years of age,Â? says Tim Worton, manager of the health unitÂ?s Health Protection Division. Â?This legislation has been in effect since November 1994. There is really no excuse for selling tobacco to anyone under the age of 19.Â?

The health unit will release the names of the charged retailers if they are convicted. Fines are $215 for the first violation and thereÂ?s a possibility of having their licenses to sell tobacco revoked on a second conviction.
