Terry Fox run attracts 400 participants in Sudbury

Organizers expect to raise $40,000 this year

Around 400 people gathered at Bell Park Sunday morning for the Sudbury Terry Fox Run to raise funds for cancer research.

Organizers said they expect to raise around $40,000 through this year's event, a big improvement over the $30,000 raised in 2015.

Frances Summerhill, honorary chair for the Terry Fox Run in Sudbury, said the event continues to attract a lot of participants thanks to Terry Fox's ongoing legacy.

“He's a role model,” she said. “He had a dream, and that's why everyone is still here, to carry on Terry's dream.”

Summerhill said the run resonates with so many people because everyone has been affected by cancer in one way or another.
Many cancer survivors shared their personal stories before the run got started.

Carole Rivet has helped organize the run for years, and was diagnosed with carcinoids a year and a half ago.

Carcinoids are slow-growing tumors that can become malignant.

Rivet now lives in Luskville, Quebec, but returned to Sudbury to participate in the run.

“Now it has become personal,” she said.

She is still in treatment to fight the cancer.
