The XTERRA Conquer the Crater race that happened on Aug 14 to 15 this year raised $63,048 for the Miles Against Cancer Fund (MAC).

The Northern Cancer Foundation, MAC fund and Kivi Park partnered up again this year for the annual XTERRA triathlon. The race consists of a slew of challenges for athletes to compete in like mountain biking and trail running.

“As part of the XTERRA world tour, Sudbury, Ontario was home to a world championship qualifying event,” a press release said. “26 World Age Group spots were up for grabs to compete at the 2021 XTERRA World Championships in Maui Hawaii, in December.”

Since its inception in 2019, the MAC fund was able to raise nearly $200,000 with the XTERRA community in the Greater Sudbury region. The initiative was created by John Macdonald and Tracy Hayes when their son Malcom (nicknamed MAC) was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma when he was two years old. Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare type of cancer that forms in soft tissue. The pair decided to create an event that would raise awareness and money to aid families in the pediatric cancer journey.

“When you first hear the news that your child has cancer, the world you once lived in vanishes forever. The support we received from family, friends, strangers and local organizations was overwhelming. We want to thank those who gave to us, by giving to others and supporting children and families living with and beyond cancer. We are thrilled to be part of the Northern Cancer Foundation family who have amazing leadership and demonstrated ability to provide support and improve outcomes for northerners. Bringing a world-class event like XTERRA: Conquer the Crater to Sudbury is very exciting. But to host world-class athletes at a world-class location like Kivi Park where 100% of the proceeds go to supporting local paediatric cancer survivors, well that is beyond words,” the pair said in a press release.

100 per cent of the proceeds from the race will go towards the Northeast Cancer Centre for pediatric families support. The fund allows local Northern Ontario families to receive a $2,000 cheque to cover any costs of travels to pediatric hospitals in Ontario. The next triathlon is projected to be for July 23 to 24 next year at Kivi Park once more. Registration for the race will be launching by the end of this year.
