Thibeault announces $150K in new funding for Maison Vale Hospice

Director: New $150K funding for hospice says gov't is listening

Sudbury's Maison Vale Hospice will receive an additional $150,000 in provincial funding per year, announced Sudbbury MPP Glenn Thibeault today.

In the 2016 budget, the province announced an additional $75 million over three years to support hospice care across Ontario.

That money, said Thibeault, will help build 20 new hospices around Ontario, and will support the addition of new beds at existing hospices.

Today, the province announced an additional $13.9 million over three years to support hospice services.

With its $150,000 share of that additional funding, Maison Vale Hospice will be able to increase its funding per bed from $90,000 to $105,000.

“What it says is the government has been listening,” said Léo Therrien, executive director of Maison Vale Hospice. “We've been working with the government for a number of years now, and they understand the care.”

Therrien said the new funding will also help relieve the hospice's reliance on community fundraising.

Each year the hospice collects funds through its annual RBC Hike for Hospice, which occurred on May 1 this year, and the Desjardins Butterflies and Memories event, which takes place July 17 this year at Science North.
