Sudbury MPP and Minister of Energy Glenn Thibeault is on the list appear as a witness at the trial of two prominent Liberals facing bribery charges under the Election Act, his office confirms.

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has also agreed to testify.

The trial of prominent Sudbury businessman and Liberal fundraiser Gerry Lougheed, Jr. and Pat Sorbara, the premier's former deputy chief of staff is scheduled to begin in September.

The two are accused of offering candidate Andrew Olivier a job or appointment if he were to step aside in the 2015 Sudbury byelection in favour of Glenn Thibeault, then a NDP MP.

Thibeault successfully won the byelection as a Liberal and is now the energy minister in Premier Kathleen Wynne's cabinet. Sorbara and Lougheed have denied the charges.

“If called, Minister Thibeault will waive parliamentary privilege (which would allow him to avoid testifying) and appear as a witness,” said Jeremy Dunton, Thibeault's communications director, in an email to Sudbury.com.

“As previously stated, this matter is now before the courts and we need to allow this process to take place.”

Thibeault has always emphasized that he made the move from federal to provincial politics because it was an opportunity to better represent his home riding of Sudbury, and to make a real difference in his community, Dunton added.
