There are still many people in the Greater Sudbury area who are without power this morning after a severe thunderstorm late yesterday afternoon.

Hydro One is reporting thousands of local customers without power in outlying areas of the city, including Walden, Val Caron and Onaping. In some places, the company says power will be restored sometime this afternoon, but in others, it says it is "assessing damage," and doesn't estimate when the lights will go back on.

To check on the status of your area of the city, visit Hydro One's Storm Centre website.

For its part, Sudbury Hydro reported on its Twitter account as of 7:21 a.m. Friday morning that power had been restored to most customers in its service territory.

However, a few people are still out due to trees on power lines. “If you see a downed line, STAY AWAY!” the utility said.
