Thousands will cross the stage at Cambrian College this week

Eight convocation ceremonies are being held at the college’s main campus in Sudbury, with morning ceremonies at 10 a.m. and afternoon ceremonies at 2:30 p.m.

Approximately 3,500 students are graduating from their respective programs, including the first graduating class from Cambrian’s new three-year Bachelor of Business Administration program.

“This is a very exciting and important moment in our history because it not only marks the first time we are conferring a business degree on our graduates but it is also the first time we have ever issued our own stand-alone degree,” said vice-president, academic Janice Clarke. 

“This year we have graduates from a whole range of credentials, including one-year certificates, two-year and three-year diplomas, three-year degrees, graduate certificates and our four-year joint nursing degree with Laurentian University.”

Highlights of Convocation Week include award winners for outstanding student achievement, daily alumni guest speakers, the Alumni Award of Distinction, and the Dr. Fred Sheridan Award for outstanding contributions to Cambrian and the community - the college’s highest award.

This year’s schedule of awards includes:

  • Monday, June 10, 10 a.m. - Dr. Fred Sheridan Award winner
  • Wednesday, June 12, 2:30 p.m. – President’s Silver Award for student achievement
  • Thursday, June 13, 10 a.m. – Alumni Award of Distinction & President’s Gold Award
  • Thursday, June 13, 2:30 p.m. – Governor General’s Medal for highest student academic achievement

Alumni speakers this year include:

Monday, 10 a.m.

-Randi Ray (Physical Fitness and Leisure Management, 2008), founder, Miikana Consulting, and Noojimo Health, Canada’s first Indigenous-owned virtual mental health centre.

Monday, 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, 10 a.m.

Jason Simons (Power Engineering, 2012), power engineer, management, outage work division, Bruce Power.

Tuesday, 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, 10 a.m., 2:30 p.m.

Valerie Filippetto (Speirs) (Business Fundamentals – Accounting, 2015), senior manager, KPMG Sudbury.

Thursday, 10 a.m., 2:30 p.m.

Margaret Lindsay (Child and Youth Worker, 1989), service coordinator, Bartimaeus Inc.
