Three Rainbow students selected for Shad Canada program

High-achieving Grade 10 and 11 students are accepted into the summer program

An enriching educational experience awaits three students from Rainbow District School Board schools, who have been accepted into the prestigious Shad Canada program this summer.

Grade 11 student Sydney McLean of Lively District Secondary School, and Grade 11 students Markus Rantala and Chloe Gagnon of Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School will join secondary students from across Canada to explore the exciting world of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) and Entrepreneurship.

“Shad provides students with wonderful learning and networking opportunities,” said Rainbow District School Board Director of Education Bruce Bourget, in a press release. “I am so proud of our student participants and extend a sincere congratulations to all.”

Students in Grades 10 and 11 with an aptitude for risk-taking, curiosity, excellence and resilience are accepted into the Shad program, which prepares them to take on social and economic challenges. Selection criteria includes academics, extracurriculars, creativity, innovation, and commitment to excellence.

Program participants hear from acclaimed professors, experts and entrepreneurs, explore university campuses, take part in hands-on and virtual workshops, develop lifelong friendships, and learn about future education and careers in STEAM. Above all, they are able to collaborate with a project team on an innovative solution to a real-world problem.

Sydney McLean looks forward to meeting like-minded people with similar goals and interests. “Shad will give me the opportunity to better understand the university atmosphere in an encouraging and supportive environment,” said McLean. “I will also have the chance to refine my communication and collaboration skills.”

Honoured to have been selected for the opportunity, Markus Rantala ”hopes to make use of this opportunity to grow and participate actively in innovative challenges with peers.”
