Environment Canada issued a heat warning and a severe thunderstorm watch for Greater Sudbury on Thursday afternoon.

Environment Canada issued a heat warning and a severe thunderstorm watch for Greater Sudbury on Thursday afternoon.

“Significant heat and humidity will arrive on Friday,” the alert said. “Daytime temperatures in the low 30s with afternoon humidex values in the mid 30s and night time minimum temperatures near 20 are expected for Friday and Saturday,” the warning said.

But a cold front moving into the area Saturday evening will bring cooler and less humid temperatures to the region.

“The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors,” the warning said.

“Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.”

And conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and torrential rain.

“These thunderstorms are expected to affect the area late (Thursday) afternoon and this evening,” Environment Canada said. “Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors.”

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

“Take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.”
