TORONTO — Effective Tuesday, residential and small business electricity customers in Ontario cease paying a fixed electricity price, as time-of-use and Tiered Pricing rates resume.

Customers have recently been paying 8.5 cents/kWh regardless of the time of day or the total volume consumed.

The Ontario Energy Board says the fixed pricing that was mandated by the Government of Ontario expired on Monday.

The  TOU rates and the hours to which they apply are as follows:

Winter TOU Price Periods
Prices
Off-Peak
(Weekdays 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., all day weekends and holidays)
8.5¢/kWh
Mid-Peak
(Weekdays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
11.9¢/kWh
On-Peak
(Weekdays 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.)
17.6¢/kWh

The table below shows the rates for customers on tiered pricing.

Winter Tier Thresholds
Prices
Tier 1
Residential  - first 1,000 kWh/month
Non-residential - first 750 kWh/month
10.1¢/kWh
Tier 2
Residential  - for electricity used above 1,000 kWh/month
Non-residential  - for electricity used above 750 kWh/month

Residential and small business customers paying TOU prices can choose to switch to tiered pricing, and those who do can switch back to TOU prices at any time.

Customers wishing to stay on TOU pricing do not need to do anything.

The Ontario Energy Board has a webpage and a bill calculator to help those who are considering a switch in pricing plans.
