Federal Industry Minister Tony Clement met with northeastern Ontario mayors March 3 to discuss how the federal government can help communities overcome the difficult challenges brought on by the economic downturn.

He discussed how the new programs and measures announced as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan "will have a direct and positive impact on the economy of Northern Ontario," according to a release put out by the federal government.

"Canada's Economic Action Plan is a clear and decisive response to what Northern Ontario residents are expecting from their government in these difficult times," said Clement, in a release.

"New initiatives such as Community Adjustment Fund, the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund and the Recreational Infrastructure Canada Initiative are important tools that will help us keep the economy of Northern Ontario moving.

"My officials at FedNor will continue to work closely with the community and industry leaders to ensure that our efforts meet the specific needs of the north. With our increasing support for FedNor, this government is delivering results for the people, communities and businesses of Northern Ontario."
