A traffic stop in the area of Beech Street at Elm Street shortly before noon on May 14 yielded $86,500 in cocaine and fentanyl, plus a loaded handgun and drug packaging material.
Municipal bylaw officers contacted police to report a vehicle believed to have been involved in drug trafficking.
Police found the vehicle on Elm Street and conducted a traffic stop, locating what they believed to have been drugs on the front seat.
“While patrol officers were on scene, members of our Drug Enforcement Unit provided additional information leading to reasonable and probable grounds for arrest,” according to a media release issued by Greater Sudbury Police Service.
The driver and three passengers were taken into custody.
Officers located over $5,000 in cash believed to be proceeds of crime, and the $86,500 in drugs was composed of 777 grams of cocaine and 88 grams of fentanyl.
As a result of the investigation, four people, aged 49, 44, 39 and 33, have been charged with the following offences under the Criminal Code of Canada and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act:
- Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking a Schedule I Substance x2
- Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
- Careless Use of a Firearm
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
- Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
- Possession at Unauthorized Place
- Unauthorized Possession of Firearm in Motor Vehicle
- Possession of a Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime - Over $5,000
All four suspects were held in police custody to attend bail court on May 15.
