Transit fares will increase Jan. 1 in accordance with the 2013 Miscellaneous User Fee bylaw approved by Greater Sudbury council on Dec. 11, said the city in a news release.

The fare increase will help maintain customer service, facilities and equipment, while matching rising operating costs and continuing improvements to the public transit system.

“Greater Sudbury Transit remains a responsive, economical service for our residents,” said Director of Transit Services Roger Sauvé. “We’ve introduced many improvements and we look forward to exciting new initiatives over the coming months.”

Ongoing customer service enhancements include the introduction of mybus.greatersudbury.ca, which allows riders to use their mobile device to determine when the next bus will arrive at any stop in the city, bicycle racks that allow cyclists to board transit, extended hours and free bus service on New Year’s Eve, as well as priority and courtesy seating for passengers who may require front of bus seating.

Cash fares on Greater Sudbury Transit will increase 10 cents for adults and students and five cents for older adults and disability pensioners to $2.80 for adults and students and $2.10 for older adults and disability pensioners.

Children age four and under ride free of charge.

Five Ride Cards will increase 25 cents to $10.50 for adults and $8 for older adults and disability pensioners. Ten Ride Cards will increase 50 cents to $21 for adults and $16 for older adults and disability pensioners.

A 31-Day Pass will be $78 for adults and $72 for students, representing a $2 increase, and $47 for older adults and disability pensioners, representing a $1 increase in fare.

A photo identification card, available for $6, must be shown to Transit drivers when boarding the bus to be eligible for 31-Day Pass cards.
