Tuition fees on the rise at LU

At its recent annual meeting, Laurentian University's board of governors approved a proposed tuition fee increase for the 2006-07 academic year.

Tuition fees for all full-time undergraduate programs for Canadian residents will increase by 4 percent, to $4,351 - $4,722 for engineering. Tuition fees for all foreign students will increase by 5 percent, to $10,591. Tuition fees for all graduate programs will increase by 8 percent for new students, and by 4 percent for returning students.

The Board also adopted an official environmental policy for the university that encompasses a number of operational areas and activities including energy efficiency, water consumption, solid, liquid and organic waste, hazardous materials, emissions, purchasing, building and infrastructure, transportation, university lands, and curriculum.

At the meeting, an update was presented in regards to on-campus building projects. The new 223-bed, six-storey residence will be completed on time to welcome its inaugural group of students this coming school year. Construction has begun on a planned expansion of the arts/classroom building, which will see the addition of a modern 160-seat multimedia classroom and an expanded micro-computer centre. This facility will be completed early in 2007.

The board also approved a balanced budget of $94 million for the 2006-2007 fiscal year.
