A pair of downtown bars will run dry this January following a ruling by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.

Cactus Pete?s Bar and Grill (now under the name Shaughnessy?s Pub and Grill) will have their liquor licence suspended for 14 days, from Jan. 2 to 16, stemming from a couple of incidents earlier in the year.

Police and liquor inspectors allege that during an inspection on Feb. 12, 2005, Cactus Pete?s was found operating over their maximum capacity of 275 patrons. On March 12, liquor inspectors discovered a 16-year-old was drinking on the premises after having presented faulty identification.

The second suspension involves the Coulson Tavern, accused of serving intoxicated patrons on Sept. 24, 2004. The Coulson will go dry for eight days, from Jan. 8 to 16.

According to Alcohol and Gaming Commission spokesperson Ab Campion, both establishments made an ?agreed statement of fact,? essentially pleading guilty to the charges. This means the commission imposes the standard sentence.

However, the businesses are able to choose favorable dates for the suspension.
