There are six forest fires active in the Northeast region, two of which were found late Friday afternoon according to the latest fire situation update by Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFE).

The forest fire hazard ranges from low to high across the region, with the areas of most concern situated in the central and eastern portions of the region.

North Bay 9 was found Friday, west of Highway 11 near Jumping Cariboo Lake, and is being held at 0.1 of a hectare.

Kempville 1 was also found Friday, southwest of Arnprior near White Lake, and is under control at 0.1 of a hectare.

Peterborough 3 is being held at 4.2 hectares and is located southwest of Second Depot Lake and east of Wilkinson Road.

Sudbury 37 is under control at 2.5 hectares and is located west of Friday Lake.

North Bay 18 is under control at 1 hectare and is located north of the Mattawa River, Northeast of Paresseux Falls.

Lastly, Timmins 19 is under control at 3.3 hectares and is located east of Night Hawk Lake.

AFE asks residents to do their part in preventing forest fires by adopting safe campfire practices. Choose the site of your campfire carefully, keep your fire small, and never leave a flame unattended. Extinguish campfires by drowning it with water, stirring the ashes with a stick to uncover hot coals, and drowning it again before leaving the site.

Take prevention one step further by considering alternatives to burning brush or yard waste, such as chipping, compositing, or saving burn piles for after the fire season. Use of outdoor fires must follow the outdoor burning rules set out in the Forest Fire Prevention Act of Ontario, which can be found here
