Two people from Sudbury are in hospital in Germany after a tourist bus crash last week.

The bus crashed into a transport carrying car tires, according to reports out of Germany. On board were 30 tourists from Canada, the U.S. and Australia who were on a river cruise from Amsterdam to Switzerland. One person was killed and four seriously injured.

“Five rescue helicopters and seven ambulances raced to the scene in the small southwestern town of Hockenheim, about 20 km from Heidelberg, to carry off injured passengers,” according a news report from Reuters.

Among those on board were eight members of the Sudbury Shriners Club, said club president David Hodgins.

"Six of the eight suffered bumps and bruises and I think, as far as we can tell they've continued on with the river cruise,” Hodgins told Sudbury journalist Nick Liard.

“Basically they were on a river cruise and they had to take a bus because of high water area. They took the bus and then there was an accident.”

More seriously injured were Barry and Betty Tooley, who remain in hospital, he said. Family members have gone to Germany to be with them, Hodgins added, saying he doesn't know when they will get out of hospital.

"We don't know that yet,” he said. “I know they were supposed to see specialists on Monday.”

One person was killed in the crash, but Hodgins said it's his understanding that the Tooleys are expected to recover.

"They've got more than slight injuries, but not life threatening, as far as I can tell."

According to the Reuters story, a total of 35 people were injured in the accident, including the drivers of the bus and the transport truck, and four people were in critical condition.

It said the bus shifted into the opposing lane and collided with the truck while approaching an on-ramp.
