Ukrainian community disappointed by graffiti in Hnatyshyn Park

Hnatyshyn memorial sculpture, walkway vandalized Friday night

The granite sculpture and brick walkway in Hnatyshyn Park was vandalized over the weekend.

The words "McSexy" and "Creezy 4 McSexy" can still be seen on the monument and "I love you Michael" spray-painted on the walkway, which is adjacent to the Ukrainian Seniors' Centre in the city's downtown.

Ukrainian Seniors Centre executive director Anna Johnston suspects the graffiti was done between Friday evening and Saturday morning.

"We are very disappointed," Johnston said. "It's a disgrace."

Hnatyshyn Memorial sculpture was designed by Mark Elliott, crafted by Khoury Granite Ltd. and erected in 1991 to celebrate the centennial of Ukrainian immigration to Canada.

It was named after the 24th Governor General of Canada the Honourable Ray Hnatyshyn and officially unveiled by him in 1994. Hnatyshyn was the grandson of Ukrainian pioneers who arrived in Canada in 1907.

"When they first started building the Ukrainian Seniors Centre in 1988 they wanted to create this great garden, the Altanka Garden path leads to those monuments," Johnston said. "Everyone's name on there made a contribution somehow, whether they actually worked in the garden or donated money."

It's part of our history and it represents something."

"So for someone to deface something so nice - there's no purpose. It's senseless."

If you have any information about the vandalism, contact Greater Sudbury Police Service at 705-675-9171.
