Unattended ashtray results in small fire on Martindale Rd.

Greater Sudbury Fire Services reminds smokers to be diligent about extinguishing cigarettes

This morning at approximately 8:30 a.m., Greater Sudbury Fire Services received a call about smoke billowing from a balcony on Martindale Road in the city's South End.

The small fire occurred on the third-floor balcony of an apartment in the Place Ailenord co-op.

Four trucks responded to the call for help, and found the cause of the smoke to be an overfilled ashtray left unattended.

Firefighters were able to contain the small flame fairly quickly, avoiding any damage to the building or injury to residents or firefighters.

To avoid incidents like this in the future, Platoon Chief Terry Larocque reminds people to "be more diligent with smoking materials."
