Union boss brings pension fight to Greater Sudbury

Ontario's CUPE (Canadian Union of Public Employees) president Sid Ryan is bringing his awareness campaign to Greater Sudbury tonight, warning workers that their pensions could be in jeopardy.

Ontario's CUPE (Canadian Union of Public Employees) president Sid Ryan is bringing his awareness campaign to Greater Sudbury tonight, warning workers that their pensions could be in jeopardy.

According to Ryan, worker belonging to the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) pension plan could see a permanent cap on improvements to the pension plan if a Liberal bill goes through the legislature without an amendment.

"When the Ontario Liberal government introduced Bill 206 last June, OMERS plan members and retirees thought they were finally getting the joint trusteeship they have demanded for so long," said Ryan, adding that most major retirement plans in the public sector have a joint governance structure.

"Bill 206 provides a weak structure with no real oversight by plan members of the management of their retirement savings."

"(Bill 206) slaps limits on how much benefits can improve even though OMERS pensions already fall short in comparison to other plans."

The OMERS plan covers 342,000 people across the country, almost half of whom are CUPE members.

Ryan will be speaking Wednesday in Sudbury at the Steelworkers Hall, 92 Frood Rd. at 7 pm.
