Union Gas is reminding its customers to clear away snow and ice from their natural gas meters and the external vent pipes from natural gas furnaces, fireplaces, water heaters and clothes dryers.

Meters or vents covered in ice or snow should be cleaned carefully with either a brush or broom. Do not scrape the meter of strike it with a sharp instrument. Don't shovel, plow or blow snow up against the meter or vent pipe and be careful not to bump the meter with a snow blower.

Union Gas also advises removing any overhead icicles from eavestroughs to ensure dripping water doesn't freeze on the meter or vent pipes.

Keeping gas meters and vent pipes clear of ice and snow helps ensure that meters and appliances function properly and allows Union Gas workers to read the meter accurately.
