The United Way announced Thursday that it has collected $1,520,744 during their 2005 campaign, surpassing their $1.5 million goal and setting a new United Way record in Sudbury.

The funds raised will go towards supporting 43 community-based programs and services throughout Greater Sudbury and surrounding areas, said United Way campaign director Murray Bowers.

Bowers said the allocation of funds for 2006 has already been decided and was based on the United Way's $1.5 million goal. The cash surplus will help expand some of the programs and services.

In 2004, the campaign raised close to $1.5 million.
