Greater Sudbury Police say they've caught up with the organizers of what they're calling an “unsanctioned street party” on Riverside Drive, and that event is now cancelled.

You may have noticed social media posts about a St. Patrick's Day party that was supposed to happen on Riverside Drive, a mostly residential street located close to the downtown. We found one on the UMentioned Laurentian anonymous Facebook message board.

“Through investigations, the organizer of the party was identified and spoken to,” police said in a notice circulated this weekend to Riverside Drive residents.

“This person has now cancelled the event. There may still be activity in the area as a result of people not being aware of the cancellation. Police will be monitoring the Riverside Drive area on March 17th throughout the day.”

Police say that similar parties in other jurisdictions have resulted in many problems, including property damage and large amounts of debris left behind.

They've also led to “numerous provincial offence tickets being issued, including having open liquor in a public place, public intoxication and consuming alcohol underage,” the notice said.

“There have also been criminal charges laid for such offences as assault, drug possession and impaired driving.”

Those who choose to participate in this type of event could face arrest and fines ranging from $65 to $300, say police.

Greater Sudbury Police advise people to take part in one of the several “legitimate” St. Patrick's Day events throughout the city, and if they're planning to drink, to do so in moderation and find a safe ride home.

Police issued a similar press release to this effect Friday, advising people to celebrate St. Patrick's Day wisely.

As for Riverside Drive residents, police ask if they witness any suspicious activity or a “gathering on the street,” to phone police at 705-675-9171.
