On July 28, 2017, a fire destroyed a barn filled with equipment at the Whinnying in Life Farm in Hanmer, which provides horse therapy for those with physical and cognitive disabilities.

The farm's owner and operator, Brenda Verdiel, said at the time although much of the equipment she uses for her programs was destroyed, she was thankful no horses or people were injured.

“Everyone is good, the horses are safe, and that's what's No. 1 right now,” Verdiel said. “We've lost all our saddles, bridles and halters for our programs, as well as our carts for the children's programs. I have no idea of the dollar amount we have lost, but it's high.”

The Lions Club chapters in the Valley, Capreol, Azilda and Onaping Falls have banded together to hold a country fair at the farm June 23 as part of a fundraising campaign to rebuild the barn.

The event, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., includes games for all ages, live auctions, vendors and pony rides.

There's a $2 entrance fee for adults, while children aged 12 and under get in for free.

The farm is located at 5134 Dupuis Dr. in Hanmer.
