A Val Caron mother is trying to track down the driver she says struck her son yesterday afternoon, injuring him slightly, but bending a rim on the mountain bike he’d just received as a graduation gift.

Stephanie Lavigne posted on Valley East Today about the incident she said occurred at about 3:20 p.m. on June 27.

She said the boy was biking home from school and was walking his bike across the intersection of Main Street and Old Highway 69 (a.k.a. MR 80) when an older model Dodge Caravan, beige in colour, turned onto MR 80 and hit the boy.

“My son … came down on the man’s hood and hurt his elbow,” Lavigne wrote.

She said the man did get out of his vehicle and asked her son if he was OK. The boy hurt his elbow, but it his brand new orange mountain bike, a graduation gift he’d just received the week before, suffered a bent rim.

“The man then left the scene and turned onto Pilon Street. Some caring witnesses helped my son off the road and called police and stayed with him until I arrived.

“I’d like to say thank you to them, to the firefighters who also tried chasing down the van, to the paramedics for looking him over to make sure he was ok and also the officer.”

Lavigne said the driver is described as between 25 and 30 years old, standing 5-9 or 5-10, with a black beard and short black hair. He was wearing an orange safety vest at the time of the incident.

Greater Sudbury Police confirmed they are investigating the incident. Anyone with information is encouraged to phone police at 705-675-9171.
