The prominent Laurentian University sign marking the entrance to the campus at Ramsey Lake Road has been vandalized.
Alex Freedman, chief of staff to LU president Dominic Giroux, confirmed the defaced sign was discovered sometime this morning.
"It certainly is disappointing," said Freedman. "We expect to have it cleaned up by the end of the day."
The vandals spray-painted the sign with a hammer and sickle, a common symbol of communism, along with a large dollar sign and the phrase "Our education is not for profit!"
"It's unfortunate," said Freedman. "We're an institution where open dialog is meant to take place but graffiti is not helpful. And it costs."
Freedman said there is no information as to who committed the act of vandalism.
