Registration is open for elementary schools in Greater Sudbury to take part in the BrightBites Elementary School Contest, which encourages healthy eating education.

The contest offered by the Sudbury and District Health Unit as part of Greater Sudbury’s Healthy Kids Community Challenge.

Participation in the contest is easy. Elementary schools located in Greater Sudbury can register their school online and begin claiming BrightBite badges.

Once registered, BrightBites badges can be claimed for any nutrition-related activities already done in the school year or schools can come up with new creative ideas to do during the contest.

Earning badges gives schools a higher rank in the BrightBites Hall of Fame and improves their chances of winning the grand prize, a Fender Blender Pro (a bike-operated blender).

Other prizes include a school wide salad bar lunch, an indoor vegetable garden and books for all ages. All schools who have claimed a badge during the contest will be entered in a draw to win the participation prize, a fruit and vegetable themed kit.

“We know local schools are already doing great things to improve their school’s food culture,” said Mélanie Gagné, registered dietitian with the Sudbury & District Health Unit.

“This contest is a great opportunity for them to show others what they are doing and to be recognized for all their hard work. Most schools already run a breakfast program or are part of the Northern Vegetable and Fruit Program, two initiatives that can already earn them badges.”

BrightBites has tools, resources and success stories to guide and inspire teachers and other school leaders to help them make positive changes “one bite at a time” and recognizes them for their efforts. The website takes schools through four easy steps to boost how food is used in celebrations, fundraising, school events and more.

Although the contest is geared to schools, parents are also encouraged to help their child’s school earn badges. Parents can participate by sharing badges earned through their social media networks or offer to volunteer their time to lead or help with an initiative.

Boosting nutrition in a school environment can make a significant difference for students. Being a positive role model and promoting the enjoyment of eating wholesome foods can create healthier eating habits for life and support student well-being.

It’s not just about “eating healthy.” It’s about having a joyful, nourishing and balanced approach to growing, choosing, cooking, and eating food and BrightBites helps with just that.

The contest runs until Dec. 22, 2017. The elementary school in Greater Sudbury with the most badge points by 4:30 p.m., will win the top prize, the Fender Blender Pro™ blender bike.
