Video: Emergency services unveil new Tactical Emergency Medics program

Tactical paramedics now equipped to assist police in high-risk events

The new Tactical Emergency Medics (TEM) program collaborated with Sudbury police to demonstrate the role the tactical paramedics unit will be playing during high-risk events. The unit is part of the Tactical Emergency Medics (TEM) program, a program created to better assist Emergency Response Unit (ERU) members or members of the public involved in critical instances.

A critical incident may include barricade suspects, hostage situations and active shooters.

“Our paramedics provide an essential service to our community, and they have unique skills and training that allow them to work effectively in stressful situations,” said Paul Kadwell, deputy chief of paramedic operations in a news release. “The specialized training provided to our TEMs will make them a great asset to the Emergency Response Unit, and we’re very pleased that we were able to collaborate on this important program.”

The demonstration took place at the Lionel E. Lalonde Centre in Azilda on Sept. 1. Members of the police force and the tactical paramedics unit simulated a high-risk vehicle take down and exemplified how they would provide medical care during a critical incident.

“When our ERU Officers are in a high-risk situation, every moment matters. Having specially trained medics right there alongside our team will help ensure rapid and appropriate medical care for everyone involved during a tactical deployment,” said Inspector Marc Burnette of the Greater Sudbury Police Service in a press release. “This program builds on the already close working relationship between Paramedic Services and Greater Sudbury Police Services.”

There are a total of eight paramedics and one team leader in the TEM team. Members of the team underwent various written, physical and psychological testing to be qualified as a member of the program. This year, the TEM and ERU will work closely together in joint training sessions.
